BICYCLING THE ROUTE OF THE MAYAS

Upon Request

Members of the Bicycling Adventure Club have the chance to cycle the Yucatan peninsula from the Caribbean to the Gulf of Mexico. On the way discover fascinating thatched - roof villages clustered around once magnificent 16th and 17th century Spanish churches built of the stones of fallen Maya temples.

 

Penetrate the jungle and view archeological sites hidden in Mexicos second largest federal park,1.8 million acre Sian kaan Biosphere Reserve. Marvel at the amazing architectural and engineering skills manifest in once great Mayan city - states: Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza. Kayak or Snorkel to your own private spot in the Maya reef, the worlds second longest coral reef, cool off in the transparent waters of the cenotes--natures perfect swimming pools--blue holes in the peninsula limestone crust fed by springs and underground rivers. Stay in four star hotels and inns, enjoy delicious Yucatean cuisine--orange marinated pork baked in banana leaves, fresh octopus, chicken, lime soup.. Above all, enjoy the welcoming smiles of the; people of Yucatan--they respect guests and show it.

Itinerary

Day 1. November 23, 2007
Pick up in the international airport of Cancun. Transfer to
Cancun hotel. Everyone will arrive in time to attend organizational meeting and dinner. Overnight in Club Verano Beat. Participants will assemble and adjust bikes.

Day 2. November 24, 2007
Begin the day riding to Puerto Juarez to then take a ferry to Isla Mujeres to bike around the island. On the island enjoy a snorkel trip in the reefs of the island. Optional scuba diving in the reefs of the area.

Day 3. November 25, 2007
Van transfer to Izamal.

Arrival and check in San Antonio Chalante Hacienda in Izamal.


Day 4. November 26, 2007
Bike to Izamal and enjoy a city tour in this colonial city. Follow to ride to Merida colonial city. Check in Del Gobernador hotel or Castellano hotel.
Merida is a busy City so there will be an optional pick up a few miles before entering the city for those persons who decide not riding into Merida. In Merida there will be a city tour visiting the cathedral and government palace to see historic murals.


Day 5. November 27, 2007
Bike towards Uxmal. Check in Club Med Uxmal. Light and sound show of Uxmal.
Rest stop in Yaxcopoil Hacienda. Optional lunch for participants in the Hacienda.

Day 6. November 28, 2007
Visit Uxmal archeological site. Follow by van to Chichen Itza
passing thorough several small towns.
Check in Club Med Chichen. Light and sound show in Chichen Itza.

Day 7. November 29, 2007
Optional early bird watching. Visit Chichen Itza archeological site early
in the morning. Bike towards Valladolid passing small towns.
Check in Meson del Marques. Afternoon city tour to the museum and main plaza

Day 8. November 30, 2007
Bike towards Coba.
Check in Club Med Coba.

Visit Coba archeological site.


Day 9. December 1, 2007
Early bird watching hike. Bike towards Tulum. Stop in Gran cenote to
snorkel and cool down. Check in Los Lirios hotel.

Day 10. December 2, 2007
Bike to Tulum archeological site and back to the hotel to relax and enjoy the beach.
Optional biking to Xelha park to snorkel.

Tulum

Day 11, December 3, 2007
Bike to Siankaan reserve to kayak in the wetlands. Learn about the protected area in the museum, enjoy a great view from the observation tower.
Back to Tulum to keep enjoying the beach.

Day 12. December 4, 2007
Optional riding to Cenote Yaxmuul or Casa Cenote. From the cenote follow to Xcaret by van. Overnight in Playa del Carmen Shangri-la hotel on the beach.

Coral Reef

Day 13. December 5, 2007
Bike towards the ferry terminal to take ferry to Cozumel. Once in Cozumel ride around the island.
Rest stop in Nachi Cocom for snorkeling in the best reefs of the Caribbean. Back to Shangri la hotel in the afternoon.

Day 14. December 6, 2007
Transfers to the airport depending on flights back.

The tour includes:

> All the breakfast and dinners.
> Supporting van during the biking.
> Water and soft drinks in the van.

> Transfer to and from airport.
> Entrance fees to archeological sites, xcaret, cenotes, snorkeling.
> Ferry costs to cozumel

Note: Lunches are not included.


Bicycling the Route of the Mayas does NOT include:

  • Airfare, lunches, alcoholic beverages, telephone calls, laundry, or gratuities for your guides, early arrival or late transfers.

  • Extensions: In the registration application, participants interested in arriving or staying over additional nights may request the special EcoColors tour rates, and these will be reserved based on availability. Mid December is high season in the Mexican Caribbean and the hotels of the tour are in demand, thus travelers are urged to reserve early, whether for the tour or for optional extra nights.
