ECOTOURISM IN THE MAYA WORLD

Sian ka´an Biosphere Reserve
World Protected Area
Santa Teresa Camp Station

The camp is located to 30 km east of Felipe Carrillo Puerto where access is good. The station of Santa Teresa is located in the Reserve . It lodges up to 30 people, it has potable water and the electricity is generated by a photovoltaic system where computers and laptops can be used at work stations. The land has an extend of 1000 Square meters.
The 60 kilometers that separate Tulum from Punta Allen, in the heart of the Sian Ka an Biosphere Reserve ("the sky's beginning" in Maya), represents an amazing journey through a land not often visited by human beings. This serene stretch along the coast embraces a solitary sandy road surrounded by dunes and low-lying jungle that shelter the poisonous endemic black tree called chechem, the chit palm, ku'ka and nakax palms, and coco plum (Chrysobalanus icaco).

On the journey spectacular scenes will suddenly appear. Dense mangroves where birds perch, the perfect habitat for oysters and crabs. Along the way, see the vestiges of antique farms dedicated to processing coconut shells. Some of them are abandoned in the middle of lush groves along with Mayan ruins indicating that in pre-Hispanic times, maritime commerce was the principal activity in the area .

The Reserve serves as model to study and understand not only biological processes but also offers the opportunity to observe the semi-economic processes and the development of directed technologies to obtain the sustainable use of the resources, according to this criteria was established the Station of field Santa Teresa with the objective to provide a site adapted for the qualification and the investigation of the resources.
