WHAT'S INVOLVED IN GETTING THROUGH MEXICAN CUSTOMS?
Tourist visas for Mexico are free and are handed out along with customs forms on flights entering the country. In Cancun you will go through immigration (show proof of citizenship) and customs (customs forms). When you punch the stop-go button, if you get a red light, a customs agent will ask you to open your bags.

DO I NEED ANY IMMUNIZATIONS TO GO TO MEXICO?
Generally not. For total medical information and advice for foreign travel, check with your health center or your physician, and check out the online data at the CDC (Center for Disease Control & Prevention) website.

I'VE HEARD OF MOCTEZUMA'S REVENGE. HOW DO I AVOID IT?
Your first objective on this tour is to stay healthy. If you are not used to spicy foods, go easy on the extra-HOT Mexican sauces and dips. That's the usual culprit for gastrointestinal upsets. To avoid possible stomach infections various antibiotic preventatives are available.

You can inquire at pharmacies, so then secure an appropriate prescription from your doctor. Some travelers before eating drink Pepto Bismol to coat the stomach.

Also follow these tips.

Drink only the bottled water included in your hotel rooms. Do not drink the water from the spigots or showerheads. The water and ice at the restaurants we will be using is sanitary to drink. Do not use unbottled water or ice at unapproved restaurants. Do not eat items from local street vendors unless we tell you it is sanitary. Bring some Imodium, just in case.

WHAT'S THE TIPPING CUSTOM IN MEXICO?
Many restaurants add a 10% tip, "propina", to your bill along with the tax. If the service is good, don't hesitate to leave another 5-10% on the table. Tips are often the major source of income for service workers. It's customary to tip the hotel maid $2 USD per day. It is probably worth bringing a stash of dollar bills and an understanding attitude just for gratuities.

HOW DO I CALL HOME FROM MEXICO?
The resort hotels generally do not have telephones in the rooms. There are phones in the lobby and a few have a pay phone somewhere on the premises. To call home or office, the simplest way is to have the front desk make the connection (choose collect, or put it on your room and pay on check out). It will be an operator-assisted call and slightly expensive, so keep the conversation short. Many people buy the $100 pesos phone card to use in street corner phones; but often in the little time you have, there's a line or that phone doesn't execute out-of-country calls. So, to reduce frustration, pay more and get the front desk clerk's help.
